Abstract

Water is a crucial element for human prosperity, and maintaining clean and safe water is crucial for survival, and due to the continuous human activities, the water is being drastically polluted. These pollutants require treatment to reduce or remove them, and from the different types of water treatment methods, adsorption is considered a fast, affordable, and easy to apply method. In this study, the ability of Schanginia arbuscula seeds as an adsorbent to remove two dyes, which are congo red (C.R.) dye and eosin Y (E.Y.) dye was tested, at first, the characterization of the adsorbent was studied by using FTIR and SEM tests, and then four parameters were tested, which were the best contact time (90 min. for C.R. and 30 min. for E.Y.), initial dye concentration which decreased with the increase in initial dye concentration, best adsorbent weight (0.5 gm for both dyes), and solution pH(C.R. best removal at acidic media). It's clear that S. arbuscula was able to remove congo red dye with R% up to 98 %, while the adsorbent was unable to remove eosin Y dye. On the other hand, the kinetic study shows that the removal of the dye follows the pseudo-second-order, which indicates a chemical adsorption, and the isotherm follows the Freundlich model, which suggests that the adsorption occurs at a multiple layer surface.
